Protecting Programs
Cutting essential programs from the New York State budget is not the answer to our current economic problems.
We must demand that our representatives:
- Invest in communities to make the economy stronger,
- Protect the neediest New Yorkers, and
- Not threaten education, affordable health care, or after-school programs.
In times when New York's neediest residents and working families are getting hit the hardest, we need a state government that will protect the programs we depend on.
After decades of government looking out for the big guy, this economic crisis needs to be a wake-up call. Economic strength is directly tied to a healthy, well-educated society. Public education, affordable health care, and quality after-school programs available to all kids are essential to creating an environment in which a society can economically thrive. Cutting these programs now, especially after decades of consistent tax cuts for the wealthiest New Yorkers, is simply the wrong direction.
Economists have made the case against budget cuts during an economic downturn: when budgets are cut, spending is cut. Money flow is diminished. The economy is hit even harder.
